In case you can't tell, it's a baby horseshoe crab shell. They found several molted shells, but this is the tiniest I've ever seen.

I know nothing of this crab, do they grow out of the shell or did the baby crab die or get eaten ?

ReplyDeleteA horseshoe crab is shaped kind of like a horseshoe. It molts and grows a larger shell each year. One time we were on the beach and saw ten to twenty shells (most of them quite large, as much as a foot across) discarded by horseshoe crabs during the molting process. Quite exciting!
We do love living near the beach!
